The first interface circuit is the realization of a current-mode approach that has the main advantage of being able to produce a fully-differential output also from a single-ended sensor by using just a fixed reference capacitor.

Impulse sensitivity function-based phase noise study for low-power source-coupled CMOS multivibrators.

The main motivation being: to realize simple frontends for capacitive sensors and microsystems for integration in high-density sensing applications, for example, in arrays of sensors for highresolution ultrasound imaging.

In addition, there are many applications where a high accuracy in sensing is not essential; in such cases, a simple interface circuit can not only save the design time, but may also offer area and power advantages over the more complex circuits.

This thesis reports an investigation into integrated interface circuits for switched capacitor sensors for application in industrial process control instrumentation networks.

Three circuits are presented: an absolute capacitance to voltage converter; a capacitance ratio to frequency ratio converter; and a capacitance ratio to voltage ratio converter.

Initial investigations, accomplished with discrete component implementations of the interface circuits, reveal a significant departure in behaviour from that predicted by firstorder analysis.

Switch induced chargefeedthrough is shown to be responsible for the deviation.

The research described in this thesis concentrates on the design of low-power sensor interfaces for capacitive 3-axis micro-accelerometers.

The primary goal throughout the thesis is to optimize power dissipation.
