The Therapeutic Recreation Specialist, also known as a Recreation Therapist (RT), assists clients to develop skills, knowledge and behaviors for daily living and community involvement.

As an RT, you will actively work with a client (and the family) to combine leisure interests and community resources together with therapy.

Students in LYHS have a variety of opportunities to put their coursework to the real-world test through hands-on learning opportunities throughout the academic career, culminating in an internship during your final year.

LYHS offers a wide variety of programs within the School of Health, Physical Education and Leisure Services at UNI where students can gain hands-on experiences working with individuals of all ages and abilities.

Transfer students should talk to our academic advisers for suggestions on what can be done to prepare for an LYHS major at UNI.

Taking beginning classes in the major will help students get a understanding of the field.

The Certificate will prepare you to work in a variety of settings, including: Students need to be enrolled in a UWM undergraduate degree program or hold a minimum of a bachelor’s degree to enter the Certificate Program.
