Students may choose a concentration in either prose or poetry.
Creative Writing minors will participate in workshop-based courses and may have an opportunity to work independently with Stegner Fellows, Stanford’s distinguished writers-in-residence.
These skills may include, but are not limited to: English majors may choose to enter into the workforce using the skills they have acquired at Purdue.
They may otherwise choose to attend graduate school to either continue their degree or master in a field related to the skills they have gained from their liberal arts education.

Our degree programs offer individualized attention and access to excellent teachers and experts who shape how people think about literature, linguistics, and writing.The English and Creative Writing major introduces students to the wealth of resources associated with the University of Iowa and Iowa City writing communities.For over 75 years, the Department of English and the UI Writers’ Workshop have been leaders in the area of writing.The English and Creative Writing major enables students to experience the historical, traditional, and innovative aspects of literature in English, and the relationship between critical reading, creative writing, and translation.The major provides the transferable skills important for a liberal arts major, including the abilities to think deeply and creatively, read complex texts with comprehension, and develop writing and speaking skills at an advanced level.Students choosing this option must have the approval of the creative writing advisor.Important: Due to the high number of applications for the creative writing workshops, the Department cannot guarantee acceptance into the three workshops required for this program.Students work intensively on their own imaginative writing (fiction, poetry, and playwriting) in conjunction with the study of literature.Students wishing to pursue a concentration in creative writing must apply to the creative writing advisor in the department and receive written approval. Students accepted into the honors program in English can write original fiction (a collection of stories or a novella), poetry, or a play to fulfill the requirements for the honors essay.You may apply to more than one workshop, but you must inform each instructor that you are doing so.Professors post lists of those students accepted into the workshops in the English Main Office (149 Kaplan).
