The Mater Dei canteen runs every Friday purely on a volunteer basis.
Volunteers are always welcome, whether it be weekly, fortnightly, monthly or whenever you are free.
Stories, laughs, the challenges of daily life with a child with a disability and tears are all shared in a supportive environment where we all have a common understanding.
As many of our students come from diverse geographic locations, it provides a great opportunity for networking in a friendly and supportive atmosphere.
It is perhaps the most popular place in the school.
It becomes very busy during the break times very difficult to find a seat to sit on during those times, so we have to stand and eat. One can buy almost every kind of snack there, like samosas, chips, sandwiches, sweet, cakes etc.A lot of students order the same lunch each week so it saves you time writing out the order every week.Just pop the money in the zipper pocket & you’re all done.A spending limit of is imposed All Classes NO ENVELOPES The Mater Dei Canteen sells lunch bags called “Stickybeaks”.These are re-useable & washable lunch bags & are only each - a better alternative to paper bags which rip easily & don’t fit much inside.We have added some new items to the menu this year as a trial, in order to cater for the children who are “GLUTEN FREE”. Orders are distributed to the students by way of the following:-Years K – 2 All orders must be pre-ordered & pre-paid on a paper bag or Stickybeaks bag Orders are picked up by a class representative & taken to classroom for distribution.NO ENVELOPESYears 3-12 Items may be purchased from the Canteen window as per menu.Food provided at school has a considerable influence on the development of children’s long-term eating habits, food preferences and attitudes towards food.The school canteen plays a vital role in promoting healthy foods and creating a school culture of healthy eating. By promoting and encouraging healthier food choices during childhood, it is anticipated that healthy eating habits will be carried through to adulthood and may go some way to help prevent chronic disease later in life.As we only operate 1 day a week, all orders must be pre-ordered & pre-paid.Orders may be sent in on any day but must be received by Thursday at the latest as our volunteers need to complete the shopping before Canteen day.
